Retirement Homes
When Major-General Edward McLaughlin retired, he and his wife Annie bought a London home, 1 & 2 Stanley Gardens, Kensington (right).
This huge corner house has since been divided into flats distinguished for their large rooms.
Shortly after 1901 the couple moved to Byron Hall, Worthing, Sussex, where Annie died in 1911, followed a year later by her husband.
They are seen on the porch in the picture postcard reproduced below.
Edward sent it on the eve of 1912 to his son Major George McLaughlin, who served as executor for the wills of both of his parents.
Edward was buried in Heene Cemetery, now a Nature Conservation Site tended by the Worthing Group of the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
